When toy trains had been very first released in the early part on the 20th century, the three rail O scale design trains had been king. Initially made as toys for kids they were a staple about the Xmas tree in December and quickly pulled out from below the bed and create in the playroom or bed space the rest of the 12 months. The initial model train sets were basic ovals or circles, had been huge enough for children to manage, and were sold as toys, not for scale modeling. the hobby became a viable option again for large realistic layouts. Being only 1/187 in scale an entire HO town could be set up in miniature on a table or a 4 x 8 platform with plenty of room for detailed landscapes and buildings. The O scale was relegated back to being made for toy trains again The O scale model trains were just also huge. Most new homes in The united states in the time had been Cape Cods, and except if you wanted to dedicate the entire basement or the 3rd floor to product railroading, the huge scale layouts were impractical. Then along arrived the HO scale. Once the HO scale was launched with its two rail track program, the pastime grew to become a viable alternative once more for massive practical layouts. Becoming only 1/187 in scale an whole HO city could be set up in miniature on the table or possibly a four x eight platform with a lot of space for thorough landscapes and buildings. The O scale was relegated again to being produced for toy trains once more, not model railroading. not for scale modeling. With Atlas and MTH supplying the components, O scale, with it is blackened center rail or new two rail tracks, might be taken critically being a viable option to model railroad with. In case you haven"t noticed the new trains; you seriously ought to get a look as they"re light decades away from the toy trains you played with as being a child. I believe a few of the current appeal for O scale trains is the memories we have now from childhood of playing with these 3railed oval tracks, which were simple to replace following a derailment, something kid"s fingers just struggle with in HO scale, allow alone N scale or Z scale. The appeal of O scale to me is partly that and partly something else. a stack of logs for the fire The most reasonable developing types I"ve seen have all been performed in O scale. A multitude of intricate particulars extra to them created scenes that when photographed can barely be distinguished from genuine life. That is what design railroading is definitely all about for most of us anyways. The trains become secondary to the scenery and buildings, and O scale allows you to have the most beneficial of both. Take another take a look at O scale model trains, you may be surprised at what you obtain. For a lot more data on visit O Scale Design Trains.Write-up Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Scott_Olewiler
I have a Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer 6-30018... ?

I lost my smoke juice and it's $6 for a new bottle, I heard it's possible to substitute it with cooking oil until I buy it. Is this true?

Don't use cooking oil-the unit doesn't get anywhere near hot enough to vaporize it. You'll kill the smoke unit, and end up having to replace the whole thing(since the Pennsy Flyer has a sealed smoke unit that you can't open and clean out). If you've already done this, a new smoke unit isn't but $15 and easy to swap.

There really isn't an acceptable substitute for the proper smoke fluid. Some folks claim that you can use lamp oil, but this really is a horrible idea and can cause serious problems(flames shooting out of the smoke stack serious).

I don't know if Lionel's started adding smoke off switches to this particular engine(my 15 year old one doesn't have one), but if they have, I'd suggest turning the smoke unit off until you get more fluid.

If you don't have a smoke off switch, you can easily temporarily disconnect the smoke. There are two screws which hold the valve guides and front truck in place. There should be a wire under one of these screws. Loosen the screw, disconnect the wire, and tape it off. This will also keep the headlight from working, however.
